ECE Undergrads Honored
Six ECE undergraduate students were honored at the A. James Clark School of Engineering’s annual undergraduate Honors and Awards Ceremony on April 9, 2013 at Stamp Student Union. The awards recognize excellence in academics, leadership and service across all disciplines of the college.
Graduating senior Daniel Silversmith received the ECE Service Award for his service as president of Eta Kappa Nu, as student representative in the ECE Department Council and for his participation in Engineers Without Borders. Silversmith is an electrical engineering major and neuroscience minor, and plans to pursue his Ph.D. in either bioengineering or electrical engineering.
Kevin Merchant, a junior electrical engineering major, received the ECE Outstanding Academic Performance Award. Merchant holds a 4.0 GPA and is part of both the ECE Honors Program and the University Honors Program. He has also completed internships with the Naval Research Laboratory and the National Institute of Health.
The ECE Chair’s Award went to three students: Garrett Wenger and Sean Segreti, both seniors in electrical engineering, and Joseph Yan, a senior in computer engineering.
Wenger is a member of the University Honors Program, the QUEST Honors Program and the ECE Department Honors Program. He is also a member of the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band, where he was once Squad Leader. Currently, Wenger is an undergraduate researcher in the university’s Institute for System Research.
Segreti, a previous winner of the ECE Outstanding Academic Performance Award, is a member of the Hinman CEOs Entrepreneurship Program, IEEE and the ECE Department Honors Program. He has worked for three years as a robotics intern at the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins, and recently completed an internship with SAIC.
Yan is a senior who plans to work as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon after graduation. He is currently part of the Gemstone Program, Eta Kappa Nu and the UMIACS Research Program. Previously, he has worked as an intern for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and UMD’s Laboratory for Telecommunication Sciences.
In addition to these honors, the ECE Department awarded Parakh Jain, a computer engineering major, with the Outstanding Engineering Co-op/Intern Award for his excellence during an internship with SAIC.
ECE would like to congratulate all of the students honored for their hard work and dedication.
