Dr. Vicky Zhao, a former Ph.D. student under Christine Yurie Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies K. J. Ray Liu, has been promoted to the position of Associate Professor with tenure in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Alberta, Canada.

Vicky Zhao received her Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Maryland in 2004. She studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing, P.R. China from 1993-1999, where she received her M.S. and B.S. degrees.

After completing her Ph.D. work, Zhao was a research associate with the Institute of Systems Research, working with Prof. Liu on multimedia security and digital forensics. She joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) at the University of Alberta, Canada in July 2006.

Dr. Zhao has co-authored two books. The first, published in 2005 and co-authored by Prof. K.J. Ray Liu, Prof. Min Wu, Wade Trappe and Jane Wang, was titled, “Multimedia Fingerprinting Forensics for Traitor Tracing”. Zhao also co-authored the book, “Behavior Dynamics in Media-Sharing Social Networks” in 2011 with Prof. Liu and W. Sabrina Lin.

Dr. Zhao also received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Signal Processing Society’s (SPS) 2008 Young Author Best Paper Award, for a paper she co-authored with advisor, Prof. K.J. Ray Liu, titled "Behavior Forensics for Scalable Multiuser Collusion: Fairness vs Effectiveness”.

Her research interests include: media-sharing social networks, information forensics and security and digital signal processing and communications.
