New alumnus Mustafa Beyaz (ECE Ph.D. 2011) has accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Antalya International University, Antalya, Turkey.
As a graduate student at the University of Maryland, Beyaz worked in the MEMS Sensors and Actuators Lab and was advised by ISR Director Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR).
Beyaz’s recent Ph.D. dissertation focused on the development of an integrated electromagnetic micro-turbo-generator supported on microball bearings. The goal of this project was to realize a miniaturized version of large-scale generators using MEMS technology. Beyaz has achieved a milestone in developing future small-scale power sources capable of converting high-density hydrocarbon energy into electricity. Such power sources can replace batteries in portable electronic systems used mainly in military applications.
In his previous master’s degree project, Beyaz developed a linear MEMS microactuator with integrated feedback control. Through the design and implementation of a closed-loop control system, he was able to demonstrate error compensation, smooth actuation, and high speeds that are necessary for the development of the next-generation high-performance micropositioners.
Beyaz received his BS degree from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Upon completing his Ph.D., he perused several faculty offers from well-reputed universities in Turkey before choosing Antalya International University.
