ISR Director Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR) was one of two U.S. delegates at the 17th World Micromachine Summit during the last week of April. The event was held in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, where Centre Suisse d'Electronique et Microtechnique SA (CSEM) partnership with the UAE and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Middle East are developing new activities related to renewable energies. The second U.S. delegate was Dr. Michael Gaitan, of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Started in 1995, the World Micromachine Summit provides a micro-nano technology snapshot to worldwide industrial, academic and government initiatives. Two to five key people from the most important regions and countries in the microtechnology arena participate as delegates in the Summit. Delegates gather in a roundtable environment to address topics of special interest and discuss the progress and policies in each country and region.
As part of the proceedings, Dr. Ghodssi and other delegates met with His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. The Summit was held under the Sheikh’s patronage. The discussions during the Summit, being sponsored by Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA), focused on the challenges of using high-end micro and nanotechnologies for renewable energies, in particular solar energy. RAKIA is a major provider of investment opportunities and solutions in its free zones, industrial parks and offshore facilities as well as in real estate developments and other ventures.
