ECE undergraduates Waseem Malik and Chad Ropp have received the International Engineering Consortium’s (IEC) 2007 William L. Everitt Student Award of Excellence. The award honors outstanding seniors in electrical and computer engineering at affiliate universities across the country who are in the top 10% of their class and have an interest in the communications field.

Waseem Malik is double majoring in electrical engineering and mathematics. He participated in a number of research projects during his enrollment at UMD. He worked in ECE Chair Dr. Patrick O”Shea’s free electron laser group, focusing on high average and peak power lasers. He participated in the Harvard University research experience for Undergraduates sponsored by the National Science Foundation in summer 2005, researching aspects of nanotechnology. He also participated in the MERIT research program in Summer 2006 and spent the 2006-2007 academic year studying under Professor K. J. Ray Liu. The title of Waseem's research project was "Practical Implementation and Evaluation of Intelligent Cooperative Ad-Hoc Networks." He has served as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow for ENEE 204. Waseem will attend graduate school studying electrical engineering here at the University of Maryland in the fall.

Chad Ropp is an electrical engineering major and is minoring in physics. He also participated in the MERIT research program in Summer 2006 and spent the 2006-2007 academic year studying under Professor Julius Goldhar. The title of Chad's research project was "Nonlinear Mach-Zehnder Interferometer as a DPSK Signal Regenerator." He plans to attend graduate school studying electrophysics in the ECE Department here at UMD in the fall.
The students will have their names added to the Everitt Award Plaque in the display case in the A.V. Williams Building outside of room 2460.
