Professor K. J. Ray Liu delivered a plenary keynote at the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), the premier conference in image and video processing. The conference attracted over 1,500 attendees at its Hong Kong location this year.

Prof. Liu's talk was titled "Multimedia Social Networking: A New Paradigm for Signal and Image Processing." Within the past decade, the proliferation of multimedia social network communities, such as Facebook and YouTube, where millions of users form a dynamically changing infrastructure to share content, has introduced a technological revolution. The massive content production poses new challenges to the scalable and reliable sharing of multimedia content over large and heterogeneous networks. It also raises critical issues of intellectual property protection and privacy issues. The first goal of Prof. Liu's talk was to illustrate why understanding of human factors and behavior plays an important role in designing and improving multimedia communications and security. The second goal of the talk was to demonstrate that the social networking approach can indeed offer a new and unified view to many classical problems and has the potential of becoming a new signal and image processing paradigm.

ICIP, sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society, is the premier forum for the presentation of technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied image and video processing. ICIP 2010, the seventeenth in the series that has been held annually since 1994, brought together leading engineers and scientists in image processing from around the world. Research frontiers in fields ranging from traditional image processing applications to evolving multimedia and video technologies are regularly advanced by results first reported in ICIP technical sessions.
