Alumnus Schaefer Named VP of Business Development for Northrop Grumman

William J. Schaefer

ECE alumnus William J. Schaefer has been appointed vice president of business development for Northrop Grumman Corporation's Integrated Systems sector.

In this new role, Schaefer will lead the sector in identifying, assessing and pursuing new business opportunities, and shape competitive strategies for growth.

Schaefer joined Northrop Grumman in 2006 from WJ Schaefer & Associates LLC, a business and consulting services firm that provides executive level services in strategic planning, new business development, customer relations, and program management support.

He retired from federal service in 2003 after nearly 35 years with the Department of the Navy, where he most recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Planning, Programming and Resources. In that position, he was the acquisition community's focal point for all aspects of the department's planning and budgeting system process. During his career, he has received several prestigious awards, including multiple Senior Executive Service Presidential Rank Awards, the Department of the Navy's Distinguished Public Service Award and Distinguished Civil Service Award, and the Naval Research Laboratory Innovation Award.

Schaefer earned his bachelor's degree in 1970 and master's degree in 1972, both in electrical engineering at the University of Maryland.
