“The skills you learn as an engineer will enable you in all aspects of your career and can lead you on a surprising journey.”

Matt Theurer
Co-Founder and SVP Innovation and R&D
Virtustream, A Dell Technologies Company

Abstract:  The skills you learn as an engineer will enable you throughout your career, often in un-anticipated ways, they can lead you on a surprising journey to someplace you never thought you’d go.  My journey as an engineer had many twists and turns.  I left school thinking I’d work as a micro-electronics engineer.  Instead, I found myself starting several companies, the latest of which, Virtustream, exited in 23015 as a Unicorn.  I find myself working at one of the largest IT companies in the world.  I will share how I got here, what factors in my life and career led me to the decisions I made and how the skills I learned here at UMD enabled me.  Hopefully, I will leave you with inspiration and my thoughts on how you can be successful no matter where your career and life take you.

Bio: Matt was born outside Philadelphia, PA in 1970.  He moved quite a bit as a child, moving to MD as a junior in high school.  Matt graduated from University of Maryland in 1992 with a BS in Electrical Engineering.  His career started as Coop engineering student and then full-time employee at the National Institutes of Health working on building automation systems.  Matt quickly realized his love of computer networking and software and switched his career path to IT.  He worked for several companies in the 90’s both as internal IT and then as a consultant.  Matt started an IT consulting company in 2001 specializing in virtualization technologies, quickly becoming recognized as one of the leading experts in the field.  He and his partner leveraged that skillset to merge with and co-found Virtustream in 2009.  In 2015, Virtustream sold to EMC for $1.2Bn.  Matt now runs Innovation and R&D for Virtustream as part of Dell Technologies.
