Homework Assignment 8 (Optional and Extra Credit)
Read Sec. 2.7, 3.11 and Appendix C in your textbook and use C, Matlab or
other programming languages for the following. (1) Plot the pmf of a Binomial
random variable X with n=100 and p=0.05. Calculate E(X) and VAR(X).
(2) Write a program to generate a random number with Binomial distribution
with n=100, p=0.05 using the method in Sec 2.7 and 3.11. Plot the empirical
pmf of the random variable you have generated. Do this when the length of the
sequence is (a) 1000, (b) 10000, (c) a very large number. Is there any
difference in the shape of the empirical pmfs? Are the results consistent
with the theoretical result? (3) Compute the empirical mean and the
variance of the sequences under these three situations. Are the results
consistent with the theoretical result?
