Undergraduate Research Assistantships for Freshmen and Sophomores
The Software Engineering for Real-Time Systems Laboratory (SERTS), has openings for Undergraduate Research Assistants (URAs). URAs assist faculty members, graduate students, and possibly some of the department's industrial affiliates, in their research.

The SERTS Laboratory is a leader in developing advanced software technology for embedded computer systems. These are the computers typically found in larger electromechanical and electronic systems, such as VCRs, automobiles, locomotives, cellular phones, electronic games, and satellite transmission and receiving stations.

The SERTS lab has established a multi-year URA program, that gradually gives more technical experience to young students as their studies progress. As a result, URA appointments can be renewed each semester until graduation, assuming satisfactory progress and mutual interest in continuing the appointment. The experience gained by URAs has allowed many current and past URAs to obtain in-course scholarships, fellowships, internships with local industry, and an increased chance to get into the best graduate schools.

In a student's first semester, their work will generally focus on web page design, electronic publishing, literature searches, small programming and testing in both UNIX and PC environments, and other miscellaneous duties, until the student is familiar with the environment. Subsequently, the student gradually gets involved in more technical work, such as programming embedded computers and testing and performance monitoring of embedded systems using logic analyzers and oscilloscopes. By the end of a student's junior year, the student will have learned various system level programming techniques, at the operating system and device driver levels. These skills are currently in high demand by industry, thus students will find they have a significant edge over many other job applicants.

URAs are paid hourly, up to 10 hours per week. Current SERTS positions are open to enthusiastic and motivated freshman and sophomores in computer engineering or electrical engineering honors, who are maintaining a GPA of 3.7 or higher, and have taken (or currently taking) at least one programming course in C or C++ (CMSC 114 or ENEE 114). If interested in the position, please send your resume, a cover letter, and a copy of your transcript to:
