Instructions for Displaying Compressed PostScript files on your PC
(for Windows95 only)
(If you do not have Windows95, go here)
- First, using the file manager in windows, create 2 new directories on the C:\ drive. Call one of them GS and the other GSTOOLS. You should now have the directories, C:\GS and C:\GSTOOLS.
- Downloading files for a postscript viewer
- Downloaing a decompressor/extractor
- Download the UNTGZ Extractor into the C:\GS directory. (More information about UNTGZ can be located here.)
- If you would like a different decompressor/extractor, there are some at this software library. (Perform a search on gzip)
- Unzipping files
- You will be unzipping the .zip files. To do so, you will need pkunzip.exe. Download it into the C:\GSTOOLS directory. (If you already have pkunzip.exe, either move temporarily or make a copy of it and place it in the C:\GSTOOLS directory.)
- Setting up GSview
- First unzip the file, gsview21.zip. This can be done by going to the C:\GSTOOLS directory and selecting the run option under the file menu. At the prompt, type in pkunzip gsview21.zip
- After unzipping the file, setup.exe should be one of the extracted files. Run this file by double clicking on it. This will set up Ghostscript and GSview for you.
- Setting up UNTGZ
- First move or make a copy of pkunzip.exe into the C:\GS directory.
- Unzip the file untgz.zip. (Type pkunzip untgz.zip at the prompt.)
- Move the file untgz32.exe to the C:\GSTOOLS directory and rename it untgz.exe. This can be done by highlighting untgz32.exe and selecting the move option under the file menu. At the To: prompt, type in c:\gstools\untgz.exe
- Configuring Netscape to automatically view a gzipped file
- To get netscape to automatically call ungzip a file and call GSview, you need to obtain this batch file. (To save press the shift key and click on batch file.) Save this file in the C:\GSTOOLS directory. You may need to edit the batch file if you are using a different decompressor/extractor or if you are using different directory names from what I suggest.
- In Netscape select General Preferences under the Options menu at top. Goto Helpers. Find "application/postscript" in the list of file types and click on it. Then click on the "Launch the Application" option. In the blank space below it, type in c:\gstools\viewgz.bat. Click on OK.
- Testing
- Try looking at one of the gzipped postscript files here.
- Please note that when viewing a gzipped postscript file, a .gz file will be created when the file is being extracted (usually located in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP). Also note that the .ps file is called temp.ps and is located in C:\GSTOOLS
