Alumnus Named Outstanding Engineer by Baltimore IEEE Chapter

Ronald N. Carstens, Jr., an alumnus of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Maryland, was named the 2006 Baltimore Chapter Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power Engineering Society (PES) Outstanding Engineer.

The award was presented to Carstens by Dewane Daley, chairman of the IEEE Baltimore Power Engineering Society, at the Annual Engineers Week Dinner Meeting of Baltimore PES on February 23, 2006.

“I am very honored to have been named the 2006 recipient of this special award,” Carstens said. “It is gratifying to have served as the Awards Chairman of the society for the past several years, and to now be the recipient of the award.”

Carstens, a resident of Union Bridge, Maryland, graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1988, and earned an MBA from the University of Baltimore in 2001. He has been a member of IEEE since 1991 and a Senior Member since 1999, and has served on the PES Membership and Executive Committees.

Carstens has over 17 years of experience in distribution engineering, system operations, substations & distribution design, and project management at the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company (BGE). He has served as project manager on several large projects at BGE, including the new Outage Management System, Mobile Dispatch System, and the Downtown Transmission & Distribution Plan Project. He is currently the Director of Project Management in the Electric Transmission & Distribution Division at BGE.
