Give to ECE: Great Expectations Campaign

MEET THE STUDENTS

photo

Jeffrey's Three Favorite Things about the ECE Department:

1) Faculty—ECE professors show a true passion for what they are teaching, and are willing to chat outside of the classroom
2) Research—the ECE department offers opportunities for undergraduates to immerse themselves in research before they enter the workplace or graduate school
3) Advisors—ECE advisors have been very helpful, keeping students aware of upcoming events and job opportunities

Advice to Incoming Students:

Look for a research opportunity early on!   There are so many opportunities to participate in research at UMD, and it can really help young engineering students mature in their understanding of the subject. The professors are wonderful to work with and you can meet other undergraduate or graduate students who share the same passion for research, and help you along with your career goals.

Jeffrey
talks about ECE @ Maryland:

"As an ECE student, I had the chance to not only gain a lot of knowledge from the classroom, but also pursue research through independent study during the semester.   My work in the microwaves lab really allowed me to apply my engineering knowledge to something practical and also allowed me to mature in my approach to problem solving.

The students on campus come from a variety of backgrounds and gave me a broader perspective of our world.

I joined the electrical and computer engineering honor society, Eta Kappa Nu, where there are various opportunities to get to know other ECE students and to give back to the department through volunteering and tutoring.

I participated in the MERIT summer research program where I worked on modeling the sonar behavior of bats with circuits.

Outside of the classroom, I spent most of my time playing tennis, either on campus or at the Tennis Center down the street. There were always social, volunteering, and sports activities that kept me busy outside of the classroom.

Through my studies, my research, and even my participation in various clubs and groups, I feel that the University of Maryland prepared me for the next step after graduation.

I believe technology that is coming out of electrical engineering today can be used for a variety of very useful applications, especially in the health-related fields. With technological advances in lasers and robotics, advanced surgery and faster research on diseases can be possible."
