MEET THE STUDENTS

|
Chris's Three Favorite Things about the ECE Department:
1) There is a team of excellent advisors who are there all semester long to help you out. They will talk with you about your classes and help you schedule to get the most out of your time here.
2) There are so many activities going on here as well. There are many projects and clubs that electrical engineers can actively participate in.
3) The ECE Department also helps to prepare you for your future after graduation. There are many opportunities to meet employers, and the ECE also has its own job fair just for ECE students, where students are able to talk to employers in a less crowded environment. I really appreciate all that is done here at UMD to help prepare you for engineering beyond graduation.
Advice to Incoming Students:
Get involved as much as you can. Learning goes beyond the classroom, especially in engineering. There are many opportunities to get involved here, and I urge you to take advantage of them. These opportunities are what make UMD stand out from other schools. |

Chris
talks about ECE @ Maryland:
I am from Perry Hall, MD, in the Baltimore area. I attended Perry Hall High School, a public school in Baltimore County.
In high school I enjoyed both math and physics, so I felt that engineering would definitely appeal to me. I always liked to be around computers and all sorts of gadgets. I felt that electrical engineering would be a good challenge for me to try. I enjoyed learning at a fast pace, and I was told that electrical engineering was one of the most intellectually rewarding programs.
When looking at universities, I wanted to see which university would help me stand out from the crowd after graduation when I was entering the workforce. I knew that employers love to see experience such as research work and internships. Here at Maryland, we are surround by plenty of industry-leading companies, and they are on campus very often to talk to students about internships and co-ops. There are also many opportunities for undergrads to participate in research here on campus, as well.
I am going for a degree in Electrical Engineering and at this point I am planning to specialize in the field of electrophysics. Once in the electrical engineering program here at UMD, there are simply so many options. There are many different areas of specialty from which to pick, and there is plenty of exposure of all of these fields early on to ease this decision. I really enjoyed physics in high school as well as the physics classes that I took here, so I felt that electrophysics would be a very interesting field.
Here as an ECE student, you have the opportunity to participate in many different activities. I joined the ECE student council, which plans many events for students. Last semester we had a Casino Night event which was so much fun. This semester, I am taking a guitar electronics class, where we get to work with guitars and learn exactly how they work. There are simply so many opportunities here.
The student body of the ECE Department is very diverse. You get to meet many new students of diverse backgrounds and interests. The professors here are great. They are always accessible and approachable.
My experiences at the University of Maryland have changed me and my outlook on the world of engineering. I received a new appreciation of engineering and the important work that engineers do in our world. It was also important to learn about ethics and responsibility in engineering.
Every student here is assigned a faculty mentor who they meet with once a month. I was very fortunate to be assigned Dr. O'Shea, the department chair. He has helped me to zero in on the field of electrical engineering that best suits me. We discuss my academic goals, and what I want to do when I graduate. I also talk to him about my summer internships, and he is able to refer me to faculty here on campus who are working on projects similar to mine.
After graduation, I plan on going into the defense industry. I feel that this is the most fast paced and exciting place to be. There are always new ideas and theories being tested here. UMD has helped me by providing me many opportunities to meet and introduce myself to many great employers in our area.
One great reason to enroll in the ECE Department is that you will always be around the cutting edge of research in your field. You will have the opportunity to take classes from faculty who are currently working on projects that will change our way of life. In this digital age, where new advancements are coming everyday, it is very important to stay on top of what it going on. Here at Maryland, the professors do a great job of making sure that you know about new advancements and where ideas are heading in the future.
