Yinian's Three Favorite Things about the ECE Department:

1) Great professors with both vision and technical expertise
2) Collaborative atmosphere to work on cutting edge technical problems
3) Working environment and the facilities

Advice to Incoming Students:

The ECE department is a place that provides the best opportunity for graduate students to work hard. Work hard and enjoy the fun.

Yinian
talks about ECE @ Maryland:

"My hometown is Beijing, China, where I got my B.S.E. from Tsinghua University before coming to the states for graduate studies.

When I entered college I chose electrical engineering because it can give me a broader understanding of the technical world, both from the mathematical point of view and from the underlining physical principles.

The ECE graduate program of University of Maryland has a great breadth and depth. The professors here are renowned and the metro DC area is one of the best places you can find in the U.S.

The students here are from all over the world, and one thing is true of all of them: they are very passionate about their work.

I enjoyed the breadth of the courses offered here in Maryland. I took more than 15 courses, participated in several research projects, and published around 10 papers. I was a graduate mentor for two MERIT (Maryland Engineering and Research Intern Team) summer intern teams. Last summer, I did an internship with Microsoft Research, which was very rewarding and fun.

My primary research interest was in multimedia signal processing and information security. My co-authored paper won the student paper contest at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustic, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in the multimedia signal processing category. I was lucky to have my work recognized among such strong competition.

At Maryland I learned two important things. First, the process of development as a researcher is long and full of difficulties. So I really appreciate my advisor's effort in helping me to become a mature researcher. Second, I gradually became more and more confident in myself. I believe I can make a difference in my field.

I want my work to have a positive impact on people's lives and on our living environment. The ECE program has offered me much technical expertise, and more importantly, the background to learn fast and the open mind to create."
