Jing's Three Favorite Things about the ECE Department:

1) Esteemed professors
2) Great research environment
3) High quality courses

Advice to Incoming Students:

The ECE department provides great opportunities for your study and research. You should work really hard to make the most of it. Participating in activities outside of the classroom and interacting with different people will also benefit you a lot.

Jing
talks about ECE @ Maryland:

I was born and grew up in Yichang, a beautiful city on the Yangtzi River in China. I received my B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Science and Technology of China. After that, I attended University of Maryland for my Ph.D. degree.

Electrical engineering was a fancy field for me before I entered college. I witnessed that the rapid development of electronic technologies, such as mobile phones and the internet, greatly changed people’s lives. That motivated me to dedicate myself to this amazing area.

The ECE program in University of Maryland has a broad spectrum of research areas.  It is well recognized for its research achievements in many cutting edge fields. The Communications and Signal Processing area is very strong.

I work in the area of wireless communications and information theory. Currently, I am focusing on the problem of minimizing average delay in a multi-access communication system with average power constraints. It is an interesting topic because the trade-off between delay and power/energy is a critical issue in wireless communications and networks.  My expected graduation date is August, 2009.

I was a TA for several semesters. I like interacting with undergraduate students and helping them to understand materials.  I attend various seminars and colloquium events, which are informative and inspiring.
The weekly coffee hour is a good chance to have food, talk to different people and have fun. I was on the board of the ECEGSA last academic year.
Outside the classroom, I like to do sports in the campus recreation center.  I also enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, traveling.

The atmosphere in the ECE department is very friendly and pleasant. Professors are very knowledgeable and willing to help. Graduate students here are friendly, smart and hard working.

The experiences here have broadened my horizons academically, as well as personally. I have gradually become more and more confident, open-minded, and mature.

Faculty and staff here are very friendly and willing to help. My advisor, Professor Sennur Ulukus, is extremely helpful. She gives me valuable suggestions on research and mentors me to become a mature researcher. Her diligence and devotion to research also impacts me a lot.

After my graduation, I would like to perform innovative research either in industry or in academia.   The ECE program has offered me a solid background to learn and create, and more importantly, inspired my enthusiasm and dedication to research.

The ECE program here has an excellent reputation for its high quality of research. It is one of the best places for one’s development.
