Kind-heartedness and Compassion Are the True Pay Off for One ECE Staff Member
Electrical & Computer Engineering Community Contributor: LaShanna Young

One of the first people you meet as a new faculty or staff member of ECE is Director of Payroll and Human Resources, LaShanna Young. Her warm, welcoming smile has put many of us at ease when embarking on our own journeys in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

A member of the University community since November of 1999, LaShanna joined this department in August of 2000 and has spent the majority of her twelve year career at UMD ensuring that ECE faculty, staff, graduate assistants and student workers get paid on-time. Many of us would consider her work invaluable!

Aside from approving payroll, LaShanna oversees all promotions for staff and tracks the tenure process for faculty. She handles personnel actions, supervises the payroll staff, and searches for just the right person to fill every need within ECE. By managing her role and responsibilities effectively, LaShanna has garnered recognition from other University staff members—she’s served on several search committees external to ECE and currently collaborates with a group of peers to serve the committee responsible for a university-wide merge of human resources data.

When speaking with LaShanna, it is obvious that her understanding of and dedication to her position far exceed her typical duties. She expresses a desire to play a positive role in the department by fostering change, creating a more social atmosphere, and nurturing a department environment that is inclusive of everyone.

“I’m proud to play a positive role in this department. I feel respected and valued. High-ranking members take time to ask my opinion, offer me greater responsibility, and give me freedom in my work. My colleagues take time to know me as a person,” Young states, “Because of that I want to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.”

Her caring nature is even more evident in the words she chooses to describe herself. LaShanna is a mother of two, Myron and Myla; a friend to many; and a trusted confidante. She enjoys her close-knit family and loves to vacation with them. In her free time, she chooses to read, enjoy delicious food, dreams about travelling more and looks forward to time spent on the beach.

As a pillar of the community, LaShanna takes time to attend sporting events to cheer the home team on—even if her children aren’t participating. LaShanna is also a caring and passionate volunteer, having worked with the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program for many years. Most recently, she has chosen to give back to her community and make a difference by serving as a community mediator.

LaShanna Young is a great asset, not only to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, but also to the University of Maryland College Park as a whole. Her gifts of kind-heartedness and compassion go far in making the department a place where many are proud to work and succeed professionally.
