ECE Graduate Handbook
Sample Course Sequences for Ph.D. Students
Some guidelines and sample programs are given below that should help students in putting together their Plan of Study. Note that they are mere guidelines: students must put together their Plan of Study in consultation with their advisor, based on their specific interests and needs in connection with their intended research area.
The specifics listed below apply to full-time students entering the graduate program in a Fall semester and intending to obtain a Ph.D. degree (possibly after first obtaining an M.S. degree). They are organized into sample "tracks". The list given below is not meant to be exhaustive. For each track, "major" and "minor" areas are suggested. Ph.D. students must select a major area and a minor area for the purpose of meeting the Ph.D. Qualifying Requirement. The five possible major/minor areas are communications and signal processing (COMM), computer engineering (COMP), controls (CONT), electrophysics (ELEC) and microelectronics (MICR). 400-level courses may not be counted toward the Ph.D. course requirement.
Note that three courses are typically listed per semester. This is a reasonable load for most full-time students, but some may find it heavy in their first semester of enrollment. (This is especially true for students arriving from overseas who have to adapt to a new culture.) Also, three courses per semester is probably excessive for Graduate Teaching Assistants, as well as in many cases for Graduate Research Assistants. (Note that for Graduate Assistants, the minimum course load necessary to maintain full-time status is lower than for students who do not hold an assistantship: see Full-Time Status in the Graduate Handbook.)
