Booz Allen Hamilton Distinguished Colloquium in Electrical and Computer Engineering

"Clinical Brain-Machine Interface Systems for Restoration and Rehabilitation of Upper and Lower-Limb Motor Function"

Professor Jose 'Pepe' Contreras-Vidal
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
University of Houston

Abstract:

It is generally believed that the spatial resolution of noninvasive scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is not sufficient to infer movement kinematics/kinetics/intent nor to isolate neural networks associated with movement control. In this talk, I will review data from my laboratory that challenges this perception. Specifically, I will present our neural systems engineering framework for decoding dexterous hand movement and lower-limb gait parameters. Next, I will present data from our ongoing clinical trial with NeuroRex - the first thought-controlled, closed-loop, robotic exoskeleton for restoration of gait after spinal cord injury.

Biography:

Dr. Jose 'Pepe' Contreras-Vidal earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems from Boston University in 1994. He held faculty appointments at the University of Maryland-College Park, in Maryland, USA before becoming a full professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Houston (UH) and a full affiliate member of the Department of Neurosurgery at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI), Houston, Texas both in 2012. As a member of the TMHRI Neurosurgery Research Program and as director of the Laboratory for Noninvasive Brain-Machine Interface Systems at UH, he directs a neural systems and rehabilitation engineering research program focusing on non-invasive brain-machine interface systems and neuroprosthetics. Dr. Contreras-vidal has also been a chartered member of the NIH Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation (MFSR) study section, and has served in multiple NIH, NSF and international review panels. He is currently in the Editorial Boards of Neural Networks, Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics, International Journal of Mobile Computer Interaction, and Computers in Biology and Medicine, and the President-Elect of the International Graphonomics Society. Dr. Contreras-Vidal is the chairman of the NIH and NSF-sponsored 2013 Clinical Brain-Neural Machine Interface Systems workshop (http://bmiconference.org) at TMHRI, and an IEEE Senior Member. His work appears frequently in the science media, including Science, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, UNIVISION, and NPR.
