Speaker: Ivan Menvedev (Instagram NY)

Topic: Explore: Building a Recommender System for Instagram

Abstract: Instagram Explore is a product used daily by millions of people. On Explore tab, we show people photos, videos and stories they might be interested on Instagram. It is powered by recommender system that went through multiple iterations of development to get where it is today. It went from using a basic algorithm based on media popularity to using multiple machine learning techniques for candidate generation, including deep neural networks and collaborative filtering techniques. In this talk, we’ll go through different stages of Explore’s evolution and will then focus on system architecture and lessons learned.

Bio: Ivan Medvedev holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Moscow State University. For the last 4 years, he has worked at Facebook and Instagram on large-scale machine learning problems, including duplicate place detection, Instagram feed ranking, photo and video recommendations in Instagram Explore. Before joining Facebook, Ivan spent several years working in quantitative futures trading in New York City.

The Tech Talk will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Facebook and Oculus from 7pm to 9pm
