Title: Quasi-elastic Neutron Scattering in Soft Matter

Abstract:

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering is a very powerful technique to explore dynamics in soft matter. The primary relaxation in glass formers and conformational relaxations in biomolecules have generally been dominant in past QENS studies. Tyagi will present some examples of somewhat less known usage of QENS, for example exploring secondary motions in low molecular weight glass formers and functional collective dynamics in protein system. By using quasi-elastic data on four glass forming liquids, he will show that Johari-Goldstein process is to be identified as metabasin transitions in potential energy landscape picture. He will also present results on the collective motions in deuterated cytochrome P450 using elastic neutron scattering. With this new approach, a microscopic relationship between the structure, dynamics, and function in cytochrome P450 is established.

Bio:

Madhusudan Tyagi works as an instrument scientist at the High Flux backscattering spectrometer at the NIST Center for Neutron Research since 2007. Prior to that, he worked with Prof. Juan Colmenero at the Donostia International Physics Center in Spain. He did his Ph.D. in materials science from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (2004) in New Delhi India. His current research interests include dynamics of glass forming liquids including polymers as well as dynamics of biomolecules using neutron scattering techniques.
