Title: ENEE 426 – Communication Networks for some of the problem sets in the course.

Course Description

The main design issues associated with computer networks, satellite systems, radio nets, and general communication networks. Application of analytical tools of queueing theory to design problems in such networks. Review of proposed architectures and protocols.

Course Objectives

  1. understand layered protocols for communication networks
  2. understand mechanisms for error detection and retransmission
  3. understand medium access protocols for multi-user links
  4. understand principal routing algorithms for communication networks
  5. apply queueing theory to the delay analysis for networks
  6. understand fundamentals of TCP/IP and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks

Topics Covered

  1. Open system interconnection (OSI) layering of communication network functions
  2. Physical layer: transmission media, information sources, digital signaling, transmission impairments
  3. Data link control: sliding window flow control, automatic repeat request (ARQ) (stop-and-wait, go-back-N, selective reject), high-level data link control (HDLC) frame structure and operation
  4. Local area networks (LANs): medium access control (MAC) protocols, Ethernet, token ring; LAN interconnection: bridges, routers
  5. Packet switching networks: datagrams, virtual circuits
  6. Internet: addressing, routing, gateways, TCP/IP, internetworking
  7. Internet services: electronic mail, telnet
  8. Asynchronous transfer model (ATM): ATM switching, virtual paths, virtual circuits, ATM adaptation layer, rate control
