"Fluid Mechanical Measurements of Cell-scale Forces: Contractile Force of Vorticella and Rupture Force of Focal Adhesions"
Sangjin Ryu, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Abstract: Assistant Professor Sangjin Ryu will present two studies on cell-scale force measurement using fluid mechanics. The first study employed CFD simulation and microfluidics to measure the contractile force of Vorticella, an ultra-fast protozoan. The second study measured rupture forces of focal adhesions of which affects interactions between motile cells and extracellular matrix. For this purpose, we developed a hydrodynamic lateral force calibration method for colloidal AFM probes.
Bio: Dr. Sangjin Ryu joined the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009. His research interests include fluid and cell mechanics.
