The U.S. Department of Energy announced that it has selected the University of Maryland as an Energy Frontier Research Center as part of a major new program.


With about 500 graduate students, many research scientists and engineers, extensive research facilities, and more than $40 million in annual research expenditures, the Department has one of the strongest research programs in electrical engineering in the nation. These activities are closely tied with and supported by numerous affiliated research institutes and centers in the university, encouraging collaborative and cross-disciplinary research projects. The department and the affiliated research units feature more than 50 state-of-the-art laboratories supporting the research endeavors of the faculty, scientists, graduate and undergraduate students. Much of the department's research is in partnership with industry, government research labs or other universities.
