Three New Staff Members Join Department

Ms. Heidi Herne, Director of Computing Facilities

Ms. Heidi Herne was appointed Director of EE Computing Facilities to provide direction, support, leadership and guidance for all computing needs as the department attempts to improve its computing operations.

Following a brief career as a certified chef, Ms. Herne spent sixteen years in Information Systems, specializing in Automation and Process (re)Engineering. She relocated from New Hampshire to the Metro-D.C. area seven years ago where she has been working for software developers in telecomm and health care industries, as well as providing management consulting services while working on a Master of Science in Management degree.

Dr. Lisa Kiely, Coordinator for Undergraduate Matters

Dr. Lisa Kiely joined the department as Coordinator for Undergraduate Matters. Ms. Kiely works with the associate chair in the daily operations of the undergraduate programs within the department. She is the key administrator for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degree program, coordinating the daily operation of the undergraduate office and interacting with students, faculty, staff, personnel from other campus units, and academic and corporate contacts outside the university.

Kiely joined the department from the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, where she worked in an assistantship position while pursuing her Ph.D. degree at Maryland. Within the university, she has also worked at aITs, and other school/university cooperative programs. Prior to her arrival at Maryland, Kiely worked at Skidmore College.

A Maryland alumna, Ms. Kiely earned her Ph.D. degree in Counseling and Personnel Services, from the College of Education. She received her M.S. degree form St. Michael's College, VT, and her B.S. degree from Westfield State College, MA.

Ms. Elisabeth El'Khodary, Coordinator for Graduate Matters

Ms. Elisabeth El'Khodary joined the department's staff last summer as Coordinator for Graduate Matters. She administers the graduate program and coordinates the operation of the Graduate Studies and Research Office in the department.

El'Khodary was recently employed by the American Heart Association, where she was the Manager of Special Events and Projects. She also worked at The World Bank, where she was Assistant to the U.S. Executive Director Office.

After receiving a B.A. degree in Communications (Cross-Cultural) and French Literature from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD, El'Khodary earned her M.A. degree in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University.

Department Staff Award

Ms. Claudia Hussey is the recipient of the Department of Electrical Engineering Staff Service Award.

Ms. Hussey, an accounting associate for the department, maintains some of the daily activities of the EE business office, including both EE department and grant accounts. She has been with the department for 10 years. She joined as an account clerk after working for the university Comptroller's Office for 1 1/2 years as an account clerk.
