The University of Maryland, A. James Clark School of Engineering, and the Department of Electrical Engineering are establishing a new laboratory and a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Adisai Bodharamik, founder and chair of the Jasmine Group of telecommunications companies, for his leadership in the advancement of the telecommunications field.

“ Dr. Bodharamik’s leadership within the telecommunications industry is remarkable,” said William Destler, dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering.” He is a wonderful example of entrepreneurial leadership, and his continued membership in our engineering community is an inspiration to both students and faculty. We are extremely proud of him.”

Bodharamik received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1971, under the direction of Professor Robert Newcomb. His company, the Jasmine Group, is among the leading telecommunications companies in the world. Adisai is also an elected member of the Thai Senate.

The university will establish the Jasmine Telecommunications Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with hardware and software to support a multitude of instructional and research activities on the broad area of digital communications, digital signal processing, wireless communications, multimedia systems and network simulation.

In addition, the Bodharamik Scholarship Endowment will provide annual scholarship awards under the auspices of the Dean’s Scholarship Program for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Six students will be provided with scholarships each year, beginning this fall. Awards will be based upon academic merit, and will be renewable for up to four years, provided the recipients meet all eligibility requirements and maintain good academic standards with the university.

Bodharamik was also honored in 1995 with the university’s first “International Alumnus of the Year” award. He started a small engineering and consulting firm in 1982, and has since built it into a 16-member group of companies.

The Jasmine Group has launched technologies such as the roving, hand-held satellite telephone; a nationwide network of “Smart Shops” in Thailand, providing telecommunications products and services to retail customers; an underwater fiber optic cable system linking Thailand’s provinces along the Gulf of Siam; radiophone service used by companies with mobile workforces; VSAT for data/voice and satellite telephones to connect resorts, mines, and other locations; and more.

Jasmine International Group is actively investing in joint venture businesses in India, Indonesia, Nepal, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and other Asian Pacific regions.

Bodharamik received his bachelor’s degree from Chulalongkorn University, and his master’s degree from the University of Hawaii. His wife, Phichani, also received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland.
