A gift may be fulfilled over a specified period of time by making a pledge for the total commitment. Pledges must be made in writing.

Matching Gifts
More than 900 employers match philanthropic gifts of cash or appreciated securities made by their employees, retirees and board members. In order to have a gift matched, a completed matching form, obtained from an employer's personnel or employee relations office, must be included with the gift.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities
In order to maximize tax benefits, appreciated securities should be contributed directly to The University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., rather than selling them in advance.

Gifts of Appreciated Property
To claim an income tax deduction of $5,000 or more for appreciated property, such as books, works of art, jewelry and coin collections, an independent formal appraisal (to be paid by the donor) is required to substantiate the valuation.

Gifts of Real Estate
Real property may be deeded outright to The University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., to benefit the University of Maryland, subject to the Foundation's Real Property Acceptance Policy.

For additional information, please contact our Director of Public Relations, Ted Knight at 301-405-3596 or teknight@umd.edu.

Gifts Through Estate Planning

Bequests
By making a provision in his or her will, a donor may be able to make a significantly larger gift than originally anticipated.

Charitable Lead Trusts
A charitable lead trust is created by placing assets in trust for a period of years, with a specific amount paid to The University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., each of those years. At the end of that time, the assets revert back to the donor or the donor's family.

Pooled Income Funds
A donor's contribution is invested along with other contributions, similar to a mutual fund. These funds pay income quarterly to the donor or a beneficiary the donor designates, based on the fund earnings, either for life or for a period of time determined by the donor.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity is established by transferring assets to The University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., which in return makes regular, fixed payments to the donor for the rest of his or her life.

Charitable Remainder Trust
Donors may establish a Charitable Remainder Trust by irrevocably transferring cash, securities or property to The University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc. In a unitrust, the donor or a designated beneficiary receives a predetermined fixed percentage of the net fair value of the trust assets as of a certain date for life or a fixed term. In an annuity trust, the donor receives a fixed dollar amount every year for life or for a fixed term. With both the Charitable Remainder Trust and the Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust, the remaining assets go to the Foundation to benefit the designation of the donor's choice.
