ECE Faculty-Undergraduate Mentoring Program

What Not to Expect from a Mentor

Though your mentor performs many functions and occupies many roles in your on-going growth and development, you should not expect that your mentor will:

  1. Be available for mentoring appointments on short notice.
  2. Provide advising on Department, College, and/or University registration policies and procedures.
  3. Give you exemptions for pre-requisites and other registration requirements.
  4. Workout the logistics or your class schedule with you.
  5. Select your CORE courses for you.
  6. Decide what your area of specialization shoule be.
  7. Tell you which courses are easier than others.
  8. Tell you which isntructors to avoid and/or which ones you should take classes with.
  9. Contact people to make sure you get an internship and/or research position.
  10. Be able to tell you that by taking certain courses you will be guarenteed a paricular job or salary upon graduation.
  11. Be on call 24-hours a day to discuss minor problems, grievences, or personal issues not relevant to your course of study. (Remember, your mentor will have anywhere from one to two dozen other other students they mentor. Also, the professional pressures and time constraints facing your mentor are considerable. So, make sure you only discuss important matters with them and do not view them simply as a means to achieveing your goals.)
  12. Be one of your buddies who you can attend social functions with.
