Electrical & Computer Engineering Honors Program

Program Requirements

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland is committed to providing the highest quality undergraduate education possible. The ECE Honors program is intended to provide a more challenging and rewarding undergraduate experience for the best students pursuing the baccalaureate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering. During the Junior year, students in the ECE Honors program take four honor-versions of the 300-level ENEE courses. Furthermore, during the senior year students work closely with a faculty member on an honors project. Students completing the program and honors courses with at least a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) will have their participation in the program noted on their BS diploma. Admission normally occurs at two points: at the beginning of the first year, based primarily on high school GPA and SAT scores (although no students are automatically disqualified) and in the sophomore year (including transfer students), based on the above criteria and on the applicants’ previous college-level work.

Courses

ECE Honors students must successfully complete at least four (4) honor-versions of the junior-level ENEE courses. These h-version courses take the place of the standard 300-level courses required of all electrical engineering majors and required or elective courses for computer engineers.

ENEE303H: Analog & Digital Electronics
*ENEE313H: Introduction to Device Physics
ENEE322H: Signal & System Theory
ENEE324H: Engineering Probability
ENEE350H: Computer Organization
*ENEE380H: Electromagnetic Theory
*ENEE381H: Electromagnetic Wave Propagation
*Only required of EE majors

In addition to the above course requirements, all ECE honors students must complete a Senior Honors Project. This is typically satisfied through successful completion of ENEE 499: "Projects in Electrical Engineering." ENEE 499 can also be used to satisfy an upper-level elective requirement.

Participation in the ECE Honors program does not preclude membership in the University Honors Program or other accelerated academic opportunities on campus, but in fact, offers an additional challenge for talented students who choose electrical engineering as their major.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Honors students are invited to participate in special technical programs sponsored by the Department in order to enrich their academic experience.
