Advising Instructions: Registering for Fall 2012
March 15- May 8, 2012

Mandatory Advising

All Electrical and Computer Engineering students are required to receive mandatory advising. Please carefully read the instructions below as well as the information on the pages directly linked from this page.

How to Select Your Schedule

Students who have already completed their 4-year graduation plan should have a very good idea of exactly what courses they should be taking. However, if you have not completed a graduation plan or you wish to make major adjustments to your plan of study, you should carefully review all registration information on the ECE advising website. If you haven't already, you should also consider reviewing the sample plans and road maps for EE or CP as relevant. You should also review the most up-to-date schedule of classes on Testudo. Once you have selected the courses you wish to take, make sure you complete the appropriate registration worksheet for either EE or CP before your advising appointment.

How to Satisfy Mandatory Advising

For 100/200-Level ECE Courses

If you plan to register for 100/200-level electrical or computer engineering courses, you must have these courses approved by an advisor in the ECE Undergraduate Office (2426 A.V. Williams). This can be done in one of two ways:

300/400-Level ECE Courses

If you are planning to register for 300/400-level electrical or computer engineering courses you may satisfy your mandatory advising in one of three ways:

  • By attending the regularly scheduled walk-in advising hours,
  • By making an appointment to see one of the professional advising staff,
  • Or through "Drop-Off Registration" which entails completing your Registration Worksheet and submitting it to the ECE Undergraduate Office (2426 A.V. Williams). This option is only available if you are only requesting permission for courses above the 200-level, are not currently on academic probation, and are enrolled in courses for the Spring 2012 semester.

Audits for Seniors Planning to Graduate at the End of Fall 2012

Any student planning to graduate at the end of the Fall 2012 must schedule a half-hour appointment for an audit with one of the advisors in the ECE Undergraduate office before you register. (To schedule an appointment please call the Undergraduate Office at 301-405-3685 during normal business hours.) During this meeting your advisor will conduct a complete audit, review your remaining degree requirements, and explain the necessary graduation procedures and paperwork to ensure you graduate on time.
  • Prior to your meeting, review your transcript and remaining degree requirements on Degree Navigator - discrepancies can be resolved during your audit appointment.
  • Bring a completed registration form for an advisor to review and approve your proposed fall schedule.
  • NOTE: You MUST schedule an appointment. You can NOT utilize walk-in advising hours for audits.

AMPERE Students

If you are an AMPERE student you must meet with your assigned AMPERE advisor. Contact the ECE Undergraduate Office to schedule an appointment with your AMPERE advisor.

Student Athletes

If you are an athlete you must also receive advising from an advisor in the College Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support (OUAAS).

Courses Requiring Special Permission - ECE Honors, ENEE499, and ENEE488

ECE Honors Classes

Students currently enrolled in the ECE Honors Program who need permission to register for Honors sections of ENEE courses should request permission for those sections on their early registration worksheet. Honors courses for Fall 2012 are 303H, 322H, 350H, and 380H. Academically qualified students not currently enrolled in the honors program who are about to begin their 300-level EE courses are invited to join the ECE honors program by emailing eceadvise@umd.edu .

ENEE 499: Projects in Electrical and Computer Engineering

ENEE499 requires students to make arrangements with individual faculty members. For detailed instructions as well as the application form please visit the ENEE499 Website. The ENEE499 Application/Approval Form and completed proposal must be submitted to the ECE Office of Undergraduate Studies (2426 A.V. Williams) no later than the end of the fifth day of classes of the semester in which the project will be completed and credit aware.

ENEE 488: Directed Study in Electrical and Computer Engineering

The purpose of a directed study is to provide advanced undergraduates with the opportunity to craft and pursue an individualized course of study that meets their specific needs and interests. Directed studies are limited to material not presently offered at the University in any formal course. Students assume the initiative and make arrangements with individual faculty members. For detailed instructions as well as the application form please visit the ENEE488 Website. The ENEE488 Application/Approval Form and completed proposal must be submitted to the ECE Office of Undergraduate Studies in 2426 A.V. Williams.
