Academic Information

Course Registration
Over the summer, you should begin thinking about what classes you would like to take in your first semester. Consult with your academic advisor to help you choose your classes. You will also want to refer to the ECE Graduate Handbook, which outlines course requirements and provides typical course sequences for PhD students. Click here for course descriptions.

You can view the schedule of classes and register online at http://testudo.umd.edu. In order to register for courses, you will need to establish a directory ID and password (see below), which will also serve as your official university email address. Also, please be aware of the Registrar's deadlines for graduate students. You may be financially liable if you drop a course after the first day of classes without simultaneously adding one of equal credit hours, even if you have tuition remission.

PhD Qualifying Requirement - Written Exam
PhD students may choose to take the written part of the qualifying requirement this August. See the ECE Graduate Handbook for more information about the exam and sample questions. (The next written exam will be offered in January 2014.) Instructions for registering for the exam will be posted in the summer.

Date: Thursday, August 29, 2013
Time: 9:00 am - 12:45 pm
Place: Computer Science Instructional Center, Room 1115

The ECE Graduate Handbook
The ECE Graduate Handbook contains all the rules and regulations about our graduate programs. You should refer to it whenever you have a question concerning degree requirements.

International Students

Office of International Services (OIS)
OIS assists international students with the application process, handles visa and reporting requirements, and helps you make the most of your academic experience here.

OIS requires that all new international students attend a Welcome Check-In to collect required information (such as copies of your immigration documents). Students must register to attend the Welcome Check-In session of their choice.

OIS also organizes a mandatory International Student Orientation to answer any questions that may arise as you make your transition to the University of Maryland. OIS will split this orientation into two parts: a morning and afternoon session. ECE students should attend the afternoon (Engineering) orientation, to be held Thursday, August 29, 2013. Registration will be available on the OIS website in June.

International Teaching Assistant Evaluation
All international students who will be serving as teaching assistants in the Fall, including fellows, are required to take the International Teaching Assistant Evaluation given by the Maryland English Institute (MEI). Student registration is not required; the department will provide MEI with a list of the students required to take the exam. The exam will be held August 20-23, 2013.

Graduate Student Life

Directory ID and Email Account
Before being able to access most online resources at the University, you must establish your directory ID and associated password. To establish a directory ID, which will also serve as your university email account, visit http://www.oit.umd.edu/new/student.html. International students may locate their SID by logging back into their graduate application ASF and clicking on Verify Contact Information.

Once you have established your university email account, please add yourself to the ECE graduate student listserv by emailing listserv@listserv.umd.edu with the message "subscribe ece-gradstudents <Your Name>" in the body of the email. All important announcements are sent to graduate students through this listserv.

Housing
Off-Campus Housing Services posts a listing of housing available in the area, organizes off-campus living fairs, and provides advice about searching for housing.

Parking and Transportation
To apply for a parking permit or get information about commuting to campus, visit the Department of Transportation Services website.

The Graduate Student Life Handbook
The Graduate Student Life Handbook offers advice for graduate students on a variety of issues such as childcare, discounts for graduate students, student ID cards, and ordering textbooks, and additional useful information. It also has a checklist for new graduate students to help you get settled at the University.

Social Media
If you have user accounts on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, we encourage you to connect with us. Connecting with ECE via social media allows you to get the latest departmental news, network with alumni, industry employers, and fellow students, and remain a part of the ECE community after you graduate.
